How to cancel a subscription (and stop the charges)

Cancelling should be as easy as signing up was. When it isn't, that's usually by design — and it also works in your favor if you have to dispute a charge later. Here's how to cancel cleanly and make it stick.

The hard part is rarely the decision to cancel. It's finding the button they buried and proving you clicked it. These four steps cover both.

1Find the real cancellation path

Most cancellations live in account settings, under billing or subscription. Watch for detours built to slow you down: a "pause instead" offer, a discount pop-up, a chat bot that loops, or a page that sends you to call during business hours only. Push past those to the actual cancel action. If the site hides it entirely, the account or billing page is where you're headed.

2Get written confirmation and screenshot it

Don't trust a screen that flashes "cancelled" and disappears. Wait for the confirmation email, and screenshot the confirmation screen with the date and your account visible. That record is what turns a "we have no cancellation on file" into a dispute you win.

3If they keep charging after you cancelled

A charge that lands after you cancelled is a strong dispute. Take it to your card and file a dispute or chargeback, with your confirmation from step two as evidence. It helps to note that under the FTC's negative-option rules, cancelling is supposed to be as easy as signing up — a merchant that kept billing after a valid cancellation is on weak ground, and that strengthens your case with the bank.

4Stop the next one

The charge that gets you is the free trial you forgot converts on day 30, or the annual renewal you didn't see coming. Track your renewal dates so you can cancel before the next charge, not after. Cancelling a day early costs nothing. Disputing a charge after the fact costs you time.

How Sula helps

Sula's Subscription Guardian keeps a list of what you're subscribed to and warns you before a renewal or a trial conversion hits, so you cancel on your schedule instead of theirs. Reading a cancellation policy on the page you're on and seeing the renewal date is free.

Sula Pro ($6/mo) tracks those renewals for you and drafts the cancellation letter when a company makes you send one in writing. Sula does the tracking and the drafting; you send it. No cut of anything, and it never acts as your legal agent.

Know your renewal dates before the next charge hits.
Free to read a policy and see the renewal date. Works in Chrome, Edge, Brave, Arc, Opera, and Firefox.
